Menstrual Migraine - How to Put an End to Your Suffering

Are you suffering from menstrual migraine?

/>

You're not alone over 23 million women in the US alone are suffering from menstrual migraine. Migraines are a by product of modern living with 1 billion people who suffer from them annually!

I used to be a sever sufferer from menstrual migraines, in fact let me tell you my story. My name is Janice Jacobs and ever since I was 16 years old I started getting really severe menstrual migraines at least once a month.

I went to countless doctors, specialist and even physicians but no one seemed to figure out my problem. Well 20 years later and I've finally found myself some sort of salvation. Before going any further please note that these are the main causes of menstrual migraine;

Stressed out or emotional damage?

Improper balance of sleeping/diet

Genetics

I always thought that my menstrual migraine was forever until I started doing some extra research on the internet. I figured out that I didn't need expensive medication to provide me with real results.

Most people are unaware of this but there are natural remedies which have proven to be much more effective. Not only that but they are even the basis for hundreds of medications as we know them.

There are two main types of medications on the market today they are pain relievers and preventative medication, all though they sound promising the best they can do is hide the symptoms.

Three Steps To Relief

What I learned though was a 3 step relief program which focuses on three main points; prevention, control and treatment and I've got to say even though my migraines still come they are much less frequent and I've learned how I can cope with them without ruining my day.

Menstrual migraines are affecting so many women all over the world but you don't have to go through living life in fear and pain. I urge you to look for the best resources so you can get back to living a healthy normal life instantly!

Hormones and Migraine Headaches

What is a migraine headache?

A migraine headache is a severe pain felt on one, and sometimes, both sides of the head. The pain is mostly in the front around the temples or behind one eye or ear. Besides pain, you may have nausea and vomiting, and be very sensitive to light and sound. Migraine can occur any time of the day, though it often starts in the morning. The pain can last a few hours or up to one or two days.

We don't know what causes migraine headaches, but some things are more common in people who have them.

  • Most often, migraine affects people between the ages of 15 and 55.
  • Many people have a family history of migraine.
  • They are more common in women.
  • Migraine often becomes less severe and frequent with age.

What causes migraine?

One theory about the cause of migraine is the blood flow theory, which focuses on blood vessel activity in the brain. Blood vessels either narrow or expand. Narrowing can constrict blood flow, causing problems with sight or dizziness. When the blood vessels expand, they press on nerves nearby, which cause pain.

Another theory focuses on chemical changes in the brain. When chemicals in the brain that send messages from one cell to another, including the messages to blood vessels to get narrow or expand, are interrupted, migraines can occur.

More recently, genes have been linked to migraine. People who get migraines may inherit abnormal genes that control the functions of certain brain cells. And something the person's body is sensitive to in some way triggers the actual headaches.

Headache triggers can vary from person to person. Most migraines are not caused by a single factor or event. Your response to triggers can also vary from headache to headache. Many women with migraine tend to have attacks brought on by:

  • lack of food or sleep
  • bright light or loud noise
  • hormone changes during the menstrual cycle
  • stress and anxiety
  • weather changes
  • chocolate, alcohol, or nicotine
  • some foods and food additives, such as MSG or nitrates

Are there different kinds of migraine?

Yes, there are many forms of migraine headache. But, the two forms seen most often are classic and common migraine.

Classic migraine. With a classic migraine, a person has these visual symptoms 10 to 30 minutes before an attack:

  • sees flashing lights or zigzag lines
  • has blind spots or loses vision for a short time

The aura can include seeing or hearing strange things. It can even disturb the senses of smell, taste, or touch. Women have this form of migraine less often than men.

Common migraine. With a common migraine, a person does not have an aura, but does have the other migraine symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting.

Migraines and Hormones

Although boys and girls report migraines in equal numbers before puberty, women have dramatically higher incidence of migraines after they begin menstruating. As many as 75% of migraine sufferers are women, according to EverydayHealth.com, and 60% of those women report that their migraines seem to be triggered by their menstrual cycle.

  • According to the Mayo Clinic, 18% of women have at least one migraine per year, while only 6 to 7% of men do
  • Migraines are most common in women aged 20 to 45
  • Women's migraine headaches are more severe than men's, and are more likely to include other symptoms like nausea and vomiting
  • 60% of women experience migraines in the week before a menstrual period
  • Women are also likely to have headaches when ovulating
  • Pregnant women often report a change in headache patterns – usually fewer migraines during pregnancy and while breast-feeding, although the opposite is sometimes true

How to Prevent Migraine Headaches

  • Water –What this means is that drinking more water throughout the day can be enough to prevent most headaches. It's best to avoid coffee, soft drinks, and other sources of caffeine that can dehydrate.
  • Sleep –Sleep is vital for hormone balance, weight loss, metabolism, stress relief, and equally important for preventing headaches.
  • Exercise – The last thing anyone wants to do during a migraine is exercise, but regular activity can help prevent headaches and migraines by lowering stress levels, boosting endorphins, and supporting cardiovascular health
  • Food – While some foods can actually relieve headaches, it's been found that certain foods act as migraine triggers.
  • Medication – Headaches most often occur in tandem with other issues (such as depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, asthma) that are usually medicated, and many of these drugs have side effects that include headaches. Diet pills, birth control, and blood pressure medication are also suspect.

How to Find The Perfect Remedy For a Migraine Headache

There was a time that I could do anything to find a remedy for a migraine headache.

/>

Migraine headaches were driving me insane, and had been dominating my life ever since I had the first headache somewhere during my childhood, and as far as I can remember, I was always having migraine headaches.

And this is how long my search has been for the perfect migraine headache remedy. The few days without a migraine headache used to be quite a celebration for me, but soon the symptoms started to appear, which told me that the headache was coming back again. It was simply torture, which seemed endless.

But as I had already suffered so much for such a long time, I was still keen on finding a migraine headache remedy. The medicines that doctors gave me sometimes migraine headache remedy helped reduce the intensity, but it still made me feel bad, giving me a dizzy fever and stomach problems.

Medicines Are Not The Right Choice

Although I had to take prescribed medicine during severe migraine headaches, but I never felt good about it, and I never really believed that those medicines were the right migraine headache remedy, as the headache kept on coming back time and again. I needed to look for something more lasting and effective.

I had long learned that medicine can be dangerous for your health and even some medicine could even cause further headaches, or rebound headaches, if your body doesn't accept them in the way it was intended. I have experienced that with a number of medicines, and have also strengthened my belief in the fact that all those medicines did was to weaken me over time, and I am not a bit better than the time when I did not use to take the medicines.

I decided to have a go at an internet search for a migraine headache remedy and finally found a natural and risk-free migraine headache remedy by learning more about migraine headaches. The search taught me a lot about migraines and headaches which I did not know before, and helped me control my headache.

How Chronic Daily Migraine Can Affect Your Life

I am 22 years old and I began having migraines in the third grade when I was 8 years old.

/>

My mother and grandmother had migraines throughout their teen years, but were lucky enough to "grow out of them." My grandmother doesn't seem to understand why I haven't grown out of them, too, and I find that very frustrating.

I know this isn't just a phase.

My migraines became more severe in the past 3 years. I began waking up with a migraine every morning. The pain was predominantly on the right side of my head with intense pain in my ear as well as the back of my eye. Sometimes the migraines were so severe that I would lose my vision completely. Nausea generally accompanied my pain, but not usually any vomiting. I've been to the emergency room, sleep specialists, a dietician, internal medicine doctors, and three different neurologists in the past 14 years, yet no one could help me. One of the neurologists I saw actually treated me as if I was a burden and she had no interest in looking for a possible cure.

My pain eventually got so bad that I was forced to take a medical leave of absence during my second year of college.

I called in sick to work many times and that made me paranoid about my job security and I stressed about how much of a burden I was to my employer. Luckily I was a qualified candidate for Family Medical Leave of Absence (FMLA) time and was granted an extra four sick days a month without any negative consequences. This program was a savior!

Finally, this past November I saw a new neurologist at a different healthcare facility.

In the first visit she took me off the Topamax that I'd been taking for 3 years, which was completely useless and put me on 2 doses of amitryptyline nightly, Maxalt and naproxen for abortive treatment, and Imitrex injections for the severe migraines. With this combination of medications I have been doing wonderfully.

Instead of having a migraine daily, I generally have about six per month. With the Maxalt, naproxen, and Imitrex, I am easily able to get rid of those migraines when they sneak up on me during the day or in the morning. My new neurologist helped more in a one-hour consultation than all of the doctors I've seen over the past 14 years combined.

I was able to return to school this past January and am excited to be almost finished with my Medical Administration degree.

However, roughly a month later, my body started to catch up with the medication and the migraines were returning. They started to become more severe and mroe frequent than they were in the last few years.
