Headaches - What are the Common Causes?

Headaches for many people are a common occurrence that can cause pain and discomfort when suffered on an ongoing or regular basis. This article highlights some of the common causes of headaches so that you can start to find a solution that best suits you and avoids the need for medication each and every time you get one. The four common causes that I have found for headaches are dehydration, muscle tension, spinal alignment and stress.

Dehydration

Dehydration is a very common cause of headaches particularly in the summer months. It is very easy to get dehydrated when you are leading a busy life and running from one place to another. When dehydration occurs, a common symptom is headaches. The best thing that you can try when you feel a headache coming on is to try drinking a couple of glasses of water and wait thirty minutes. If you are still not feeling better and you are really experiencing discomfort or pain, then you can start to try another tactic.

Muscle Pain

If you are suffering significant muscle tension in your neck and shoulders, this can be a cause of headaches. This tension can be caused by a range of issues that are part of your day to day life and you may not even be aware of the effect they are having on you. Some examples include an inappropriate desk set-up at work, the size and shape of your pillow, the way that you sit and your posture. These are just some simple examples of things that can create muscle tension, resulting in headaches. It may not be obvious what the source of your problem is at first, but it is well worth evaluating so you can tackle the source rather than just the symptoms.

Spinal Alignment

Often if you have issues with your spinal alignment, it creates a series of secondary issues throughout your body. Neck pain is one that typically results in headaches, in a similar manner to muscle tension. If this is the case and you are already receiving treatment for your back problems, you should mention that this is the case so that it can be taken into consideration during your treatment. If you have had an ongoing issue with your back and left it untreated, then this is an indication that you may want to do something about it before it becomes increasingly painful and starts affecting you in other ways.

Stress Management

The last cause that is reasonably common is stress. If you are stressed or anxious, you can form the habit of holding your body in a state a tension without even realising you are doing it. Some common examples are bunching up your shoulders, locking your jaw and clenching or grinding your teeth. All of these create muscle spasms and tension throughout your neck and shoulders that will cause headaches.

These are just some examples of common causes of headaches. As you can see some can be easily tackled and others will require treatment over time. However if you are a sufferer, then you will understand that it is well worth putting the effort toward addressing the source of the issue, so you can lead a headache-free life.
